Understanding every child, one observation at a time, with Greshma Momaya

At Little Red Hen Preschool, we believe that every child grows, learns and expresses themselves in their own unique way. Understanding these individual journeys requires more than observation. It requires informed educators who continually refine their practice to support every learner with care and purpose. On 11 July, our teaching team participated in an enriching professional development workshop led by Ms Greshma Momaya, focusing on one of the most important aspects of early childhood education: meaningful assessments and report cards.

The session explored a simple yet powerful idea. In the early years, learning assessment workshop assessments are not about testing children or assigning grades. Instead, they are thoughtful observations that help teachers understand how each child learns, communicates, explores, solves problems and builds relationships.

When conducted meaningfully, assessments become a valuable tool for recognising a child’s strengths, identifying emerging skills and understanding areas where additional support may be needed. They help educators create personalised learning experiences that nurture every aspect of a child’s development, including cognitive, social, emotional, physical and creative growth.

The learning assessment workshop also highlighted how well-designed assessment reports provide families with a holistic picture of their child’s progress. Rather than focusing solely on outcomes, they celebrate milestones, document growth over time and offer meaningful insights into each child’s unique learning journey.

Meaningful assessments don’t measure children. They help us understand them
