Pre-Toddler Play

For 1.5-2 years

At Little Red Hen, we thoughtfully design experiences that support the unique developmental milestones of toddlers aged 1 year 5 months to 2 years. This age is a time of rapid growth, exploration, and emerging independence. Our curriculum focuses on holistic development through carefully curated activities that foster physical, emotional, social, language, and cognitive skills.

At this early stage, children begin to explore the world with growing curiosity, mobility, and emerging independence. Pre-toddlers are learning to understand cause and effect, build basic vocabulary, and engage in parallel play — where they play alongside others, even if not directly interacting.

Children between 1.5 and 2 years begin to recognise familiar routines, follow simple one-step instructions, and express basic needs through words, gestures, or actions. They may also start experimenting with pretend play, mimicking adult behaviours, and showing preferences for certain toys or people.

Key Developmental Goals

Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

  • Gross Motor Skills: Improving balance, coordination, and movement through activities like climbing, walking on varied surfaces, pushing and pulling toys, and simple obstacle courses.
  • Fine Motor Skills: Strengthening hand-eye coordination through stacking blocks, posting activities, finger painting, tearing paper, and manipulating simple puzzles.
  • Language Development: Encouraging vocabulary building through songs, rhymes, picture books, object-naming games, and simple storytelling.
  • Cognitive Skills: Supporting curiosity and problem-solving with cause-and-effect toys, matching games, sorting by colour or shape, and sensory exploration.
  • Social-Emotional Growth: Building trust and confidence through group play, turn-taking activities, pretend play, and routines that promote independence and self-help skills.
  • Sensorial Exploration: Offering rich sensorial experiences using water, sand, textured materials, natural objects, sound shakers, and more to enhance sensory awareness and focus.
  • Activity-based:
Sensory play using textures, sounds, and colours
Circle time with music, simple action rhymes and finger plays
Movement activities to develop gross motor skills and rhythm
Imitative play to build early social awareness
  • Emerging Literacy:
Listening to short stories and picture books,
    Responding to sounds and songs,
Pointing to and identifying familiar objects,
Early speech encouragement through naming and repetition

    Playing with cause-and-effect toys
Responding to changes in the environment — sights, sounds, and textures

The Class Children to Teacher ratio at Little Red Hen Early Years is 15:1 for Pre-Toddler Play sections. According to research conducted by USA’s National Bureau of Economic Research, a small class size and low student teacher ratios were one of the most vital elements in early childhood education settings to future academic achievements.

We have learnt that there is no absolute education approach that will work as the perfect preschool learning curriculum for all children in the early years.

We have integrated the education approaches of Montessori Education + The Play Way Methodology while following the framework of Early Years Foundation Stage ( EYFS) guidelines.

Learning and development at Little Red Hen Preschools cover 7 key areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
